Ok I’ve been calling Asus support for like 2-3 days now and they still are pretty clueless on how to resolve my RAM issue.
It’s really annoying seeing how they keep asking me to try and install another graphics driver and other random stuff to see if it fixes the problem, but seriously hasn’t anyone with this problem ever called them before? Wtf.
So the first time I called today I got asked to download the graphics driver from the Asus support download page and install it. Almost amusingly though, the files which so badly linked were found on the page were the drivers for a 32bit system.
And my computer clearly states that it uses a 64 bit system. So naturally that didn’t work. But I didn’t have time to call them again until I got back from my meeting in Stockholm so I rushed away to the bus.
Of course when I got back home I had about an hour to call before they closed their support phone at 5 pm. So I called up again and were once again asked to give them the serial number for the computer, which by now seems pretty pointless since the only thing it seems to do is to let them determine that it’s indeed a 64 bit system that of which I have been telling them from the start.
And so this new guy asked me to look in the bios to see if all memory was recognized in there, and of course there was no signs of problems in there. It only helps bringing this mystery into an even bigger enigma.
And the only solution they seemed to have was pretty much to maybe hope for a bios or graphics driver update in the future that might fix the issue. What kind of lame excuse is that? How can they even sell a computer stating 4gb ram when you will only get 3 gb that’s usable?
Also there is no place on the specs or any information about the hardware where it says that the graphics card will eat 1gb of additional memory to beef itself up even more. That’s just bullshit.
I haven’t been able to find any option to turn off the shared memory portion either, so It’s kinda safe to say that it will probably not work.
Then again, this might also be one of those ridiculous kinds of early bugs since Windows 7 is a brand new OS and probably needs some fixes and updates. Although it sounds really far fetched.
I could of course assign 250gb harddrive space for virtual memory just for the heck of it, but virtual memory isn’t even near as fast as hardware memory, so that would be pretty pointless and crippling.
I’m seriously considering to just install everything on it and get stuff up and running anyway, I’m tired of dealing with all this support crap. Spending hours on phone with the same stupid questions over and over again.
Yes I have a 64 bit system, yes it is a dual core computer, yes I have installed new drivers and yes I have tried reformatting the computer. FFS can they come up with something new?
It would even be a lot easier if they had live internet support while on the phone so I could just send them all the screenshots and log files to them so they understand what I’m trying to tell them.
Seriously, not everyone who calls the support is hopeless with computers.
